The Season of Lent
Yesterday marked the beginning of the Lenten season, a time of reflection, repentance, and spiritual growth leading up to the celebration of Easter.
What is Lent?
Lent is a 40-day period of preparation for Easter, representing the time Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before beginning his public ministry. It begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. During Lent, Catholics are called to deepen their faith through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity.
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. It derives its name from the practice of placing ashes in the mark of a cross on the foreheads of believers. The ashes are made by burning palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday.
Lenten Practices
During Lent, Catholics are encouraged to engage in various spiritual disciplines:
1. Prayer: Devote time to prayer and meditation, fostering a deeper relationship with God.
2. Fasting: Abstain from certain foods or activities. Catholics fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, consuming only one full meal and abstaining from meat.
3. Almsgiving: Practice generosity and charity by supporting those in need through acts of kindness, donations, and service to others.
Engaging Children in Lenten Observance
As we observe Lent within our school community, we encourage parents to involve their children in age-appropriate Lenten practices. This could include attending Mass together as a family, discussing the significance of Lent, praying together, and finding ways to serve others in need.
Catholic Schools Parents Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn has provided a great resource to support you during the Lenten season. 'Family Engagement with Faith Term 1'.
St Matthew's School Community celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass with Fr Simon today. The students participated reverently in the service, and many of the parishioners present commented on their beautiful behaviour.
I would like to thank our Acting Religious Education Coordinator, Sophie Murdock, for organising our special Ash Wednesday Mass.
Meet the Teacher
Year 6 Camp
Next Monday, 19 February, our Year 6 students, accompanied by Mrs. Cole, Mr. Hunt, Miss Beisnner, Mr. Hargraves, and Mr. Crutcher, head off to the Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre for a two-night/three-day camp.
The students will participate in a range of activities, including mountain bikes, slider trikes, archery, survival skills, and initiative games.
We wish you a wonderful time and look forward to sharing the updates on social media.
Community Council
This week, we had our first Community Council meeting for the year.
The new council looks forward to introducing themselves and sharing information about their role in representing you, the parent body, in the coming newsletters and at the Welcome Barbeque.
2024 Welcome Barbeque
Your support is appreciated.
NAPLAN Online
NAPLAN testing will occur in our school between 13 and 25 March 2024 for students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
Online NAPLAN tests provide more precise results and are engaging for students. The tests are tailored (or adaptive), which means that each test presents questions that may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. This helps students remain engaged with the assessment.
Tailored testing allows a wider range of student abilities to be assessed and measures student achievement more precisely. A student’s overall NAPLAN result is based on both the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.
All Year 3 students will continue to complete the writing assessment on paper.
NAPLAN is one form of assessment that schools use to provide information about literacy and numeracy achievement. It supports school improvement processes by enabling us to monitor student progress over time and to identify areas of strength and development.
Visit www.nap.edu.au to see interactive versions of the test and for more information.
Thanks for being flexible!
Thank you for your patience with the change of morning access to our school's Junior Playground. As you would have noticed Wetpour commenced laying the rubber soft fall during the week. The base coat is now down and the colourful rubber top coat will be applied as soon as there is no threat of rain.
In truth and love,
Sarah Lowe
